2. New York

New York also had fewer people, with 216,778 leaving in 2023. High living costs and a tough money situation are problems for New York City and the rest of the state.

The COVID-19 pandemic made things worse, causing many people to look for states where it costs less to live and taxes are better. New York City alone lost almost 6% of its people, which is 546,000 people, in recent years.

6. Maryland

In 2023, North Carolina gained 139,526 people because it has a good job market, a low cost to live there, and a nice way of life. Many people have moved there because the state has a growing tech business and good schools, especially in places like the Research Triangle.
